Climate Footprint of Marcellus Shale Gas Could Be Less Than That of Coal

Friday, August 19th, 2011
Natural gas produced in the Marcellus Shale gas basin in Pennsylvania and New York is not as big a contributor to climate change as coal, according to a study of the "life cycle" greenhouse gas emissions of natural gas by researchers in Pittsburgh. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University weighed into a growing body of analyses about the environmental impact of a natural gas boom stretching ...

Study on Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Global Cities Highlights Importance of Geophysical and Technical Factors

By including upstream emissions from fuels, GHG emissions from cities exceed those attributed to direct end-use by up to 24% (for Toronto). Tonnes CO 2 e/capita. Credit: ACS, Kennedy et al. 2009. An international study of 10 global cities found that a balance of geophysical factors (climate, access to resources, and gateway status) and technical factors (power generation, urban design, and waste processing) determine the greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) attributable to citi

Many people are becoming more aware of the term Carbon Footprint. For those of you who don’t know the meaning… a little help from Wikipedia : A carbon footprint is “the total set of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions caused directly and indirectly by an individual, organization, event or product” (UK Carbon Trust 2008). An individual, nation or organization’s carbon footprint is measured by undertaking a GHG emissions assessment. Once the size of a carbon footprint is known, a strategy can be de
