In July 2009, as the GFC played itself out, Pope Benedict XV1 issued a papal letter - an encyclical - suggesting that love - caritas - binds us in society and in the market economy. What sense can an economist make of this? Or theologians? Or indeed the Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne? He can make little sense of the encyclical and surprisingly it's the economist who warms to the Pope's words.
